The Buchanans' Home
By: Rio The mansion situated across the bay directly in front of Nick's house in West Egg, was the property of the Buchanans. It was where Tom and Daisy lived. Nick describes Tom's 'rather hard mouth and supercilious manner...' and his 'Two shining arrogant eyes..', 'the enormous power of that body - he seemed to fill those glistening boots until he strained the top lacing....' 'It was a body capable of enormous leverage - a cruel body.' Tom's mansion was very elaborate and rich. He even had his personal polo field including horses. It looked so enormous and luxurious that in a way it reflected his body. |

By: Rhona The Buchanan's mansion is at first described from a distance as being an elaborate Georgian Colonial mansion overlooking the bay. It has a huge perfectly cared-for garden. 'The lawn started at the beach and ran towards the front door for a quarter of a mile, jumping over sundials and brick walls and burning gardens'. It gives you the feeling that the house is so elaborate and grand, it is almost over-powering. When Nick goes inside, he describes the lighting as being a soft rose colour and everything else is in pastel, heavenly colours. Even the two women who are 'buoyed up' on an enormous couch are wearing light, flowing dresses. 'A breeze blew through the room, blew curtains in at one end and out the other like pale flags, twisting them up towards the frosted wedding cake of the ceiling'. |
