In your own words describe Hemingway's experience at the front.

Hemingway always wanted to participate in the 'heart' of the battle. That day he was passing around treats to some soldiers, when a trench mortar shell exploded a few feet away. He saw his friend soldier pass out right by him as he was trying to help. Hemingway had extensive wounds from his hips downwards, but still he insisted that his friend had to be treated before taking care of himself. For this act of heroism he received a medal and other awards.

Hemingway went to the front by bike to boost the morale of the soldiers. While he and the soldiers were eating chocolate, they heard a sound and then an explosion as if a blast furnace door had been blown open. He had around 200 pieces of shell buried in his legs and as he fell he bumped his head on a wall. Despite his injuries he tried to save a man that had had both of his legs blown off by carrying him on his back to the station, but the man had already died. Hemingway then crawled back and collapsed. Two soldiers carried him to the station dropping him twice on the way. He was taken to a field hospital and then to an American hospital in Milan.
