It was George C. Scott who said, "Directors are supposed to help the audience. Good directors don't direct actors." He may well have had Delbert Mann in mind. Here is a director whose name ought to be resurrected given that he, Roman Polanski and Billy Wilder are the only directors to have won both the Academy Award and the Palm d'Or for the same film. In Mann's case, it was the 1955 film 'Marty' based on the TV series of the same name, also directed by Delbert Mann.
Certainly his 1970 television film of 'Jane Eyre' is a well constructed work with sensitive, convincing performances from Susannah York as Jane and George C. Scott as Rochester. In the spirit of rediscovery, we embed a youtube copy of his awards winning 'Marty'.
