Ernest Hemingway was born into a middle class American family in Oak Park, Illinois, on 21 July 1899. His father was a doctor, his mother a music teacher. Interested in sports and hunting, and intensely competitive, Hemingway began writing while in secondary school. In 1917, after leaving school, he decided not to go to university and took a job as a reporter on the Kansas City Star
